Girls Pregnant at Highschools Because of Video Games…WTF?!?
I found this blog at Joystiq that says:
65 out of 490 young ladies who attend Timkin High School in Canton, Ohio are preggers, and video games may be to blame, according to a local Ohio newspaper, which had this to say on the subject:
Whose fault is it that more than 13 percent of Timken’s girls are with child? Some would say fault-finding isn’t a fruitful exercise, but in this case, it’s critical. Suspects range from movies, TV and video games to lazy parents and lax discipline. Only one thing is sure: Schools don’t impregnate children.
The blog post at Joystiq is referring to this article at cantonrep.com. Yes, it is a very sad thing that so many young girls in that school are becoming pregnant. But, what I want to know is how someone can even claim that the pregnancies are caused by electronic media. It’s lack of sex education both in schools and in homes. It’s the irresponsiblity of these teenagers and the poor influence around the town that is the cause of these pregnancies…not TV and videogames. I mean, come on…when was the last time you played the video game: “Uber-Pregnancy Power” or watched the kids show: “C’mon Kids, Pregnancy can be FUN!” When I was in highschool, I watched the same type of shows that are on today and I didn’t run around getting everyone pregnant.
Stupid stupid stupid.
The comments at Joystiq are pretty interesting, by the way ;)

But on a more serious note:
I think that this makes no sense at all. It says that the girls are in school… You know, School… the place you go to get smarter.
How are video games to blame in any way, shape, or form? I am very confuzed, because I have yet to see a video game bust a nut in some chick. WTF!!!
This is just another ploy by news stations for more stories that feed off of fear. Parents not letting their children play a certain game because the news said that it will in some way poses them and make them do bad things. They don’t need to do a whole expose’ on video games to make certain people afraid. They just have to mension it and everyone goes into defcon 1. When will people learn that everything the “God Box” says is not true?

Hopefully Microsoft will pull some marketing tricks to raise the sales of the Xbox 360 otherwise once Playstation 3 and Nintendo Wii hit the markets its all over for the Japanese Market, a very important market when it comes to video games! There isn’t much more else to report, in the mean time there is this story about “Girls Pregnant at Highschools Because of Video Games…WTF?!?” Until next time… [...]

Posted: Jul 29th, 2006 at 8:33 amReply to this comment.I agree mostly, except for some of real reasons behind teenage pregnancy. Its not to do with influences or sex education… its instinctive, people _know_ how sex works from age 14. The kids aren’t getting around having sex unaware of what might happen. The _only_ reason behind this problem is…. drumroll!… irresponsibility. They just dont care, full stop. Im a teenager, I dont care, but I have the decency to wear a dinger. Its just that minority of people who dont have the brainpower and generally cant be bothered averting a simple problem.

Yes, it’s not just tv and games that influence impressionable youth…BUT…let’s not turn a blind eye, and say that media is not a very large part of the degradation of morals, etc. and Yes, it’s up to parents of these youth to do a better job of parenting, and connecting with their kids.

Posted: Aug 3rd, 2006 at 9:43 pmReply to this comment.I think the article hints at the sexual content of tv shows, movies as well as video games (think Grand Theft Auto) where sex is portrayed as “cool” even without the necessary precautions. Remember these kids are very young (13 years old) and some of them might be easily influenced by media as well as by other kids. So although the link to video games might seem inappropiate at first, young kids are influenced by what they see, and just like on tv shows and in movies, (some) video games do have sexual content. The article does not single out video games as a cause for pregnant kids but rather hints at how young kids are easily influenced by different types of media.
